Getting there

Fly into Corfu International Airport (CFU), just south of Corfu Town. In August there are direct flights from most major UK and European airports (British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and others). Book early — August is peak season and prices climb fast. You can also reach Corfu by ferry from Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland.

Getting around

Taxis are available at the airport and in Corfu Town, but hiring a car is the easiest way to get around, especially for reaching the beaches and venues. Book rental cars well in advance for August. Roads are winding but well maintained — allow more time than the map suggests.

Where to stay

Our suggestion: book a villa or Airbnb with your group, somewhere between the airport and the Achilleion. That's the stretch the venue sits on, so you'll be close to Ekaterini Estate and a short hop from the airport and Corfu Town. We'll be arranging transport to and from the venue for the celebrations, and pickups work far better (and are much more fun) when you're staying together — so gather your favourite people and share a place with a pool. Weather in August

Hot and dry — expect daytime temperatures of 28–33°C, plenty of sunshine and warm evenings around 22–25°C. Sea temperature is a lovely 25°C. Pack light clothing, swimwear, sunscreen and something a little smarter for the wedding itself.

Money

Greece uses the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for beach bars, taxis and smaller tavernas. ATMs are easy to find in towns.

Things to do

If you're making a trip of it: wander the UNESCO-listed Corfu Old Town with its Venetian fortresses and marble-paved alleys; take a boat to the postcard bays of Paleokastritsa; visit the Achilleion Palace; watch the sunset from Pelekas; or day-trip to the tiny islands of Vidos and Pontikonisi.

For beach days, these are the ones we'd send you to — all worth booking a sunbed in advance during August:

• Barbati — Piedra Del Mar or Verde Blu beach clubs, on the green north-east coast looking across to Albania.
• Paleokastritsa — Aragosta, Akron or Acapulco beach clubs, tucked into Corfu's most dramatic bays.
• Glyfada — Pazuzu, on the long sandy west-coast beach and perfectly placed for sunset.

Eating & drinking

Don't leave without trying Corfiot specialities: sofrito (veal in white wine and garlic), pastitsada (spiced beef with pasta), bourdeto (fish in spicy tomato sauce) and the local kumquat liqueur.

Our favourites in Corfu Old Town — book ahead in August, the good ones fill up:

• To Tsipouradiko — small plates and tsipouro, exactly the sort of place you end up staying at all night.
• Ora — modern Greek cooking done properly.
• The Venetian Well — a beautiful old square and the town's special-occasion table.
• Etrusco — refined Italian-Corfiot, worth dressing up for.
• Naok Azur — seafood by the water.
• Arcadion Bistro — right on the Liston, perfect for people-watching over dinner.
• Bougainvillea — relaxed, pretty and reliably good.

Good to know

Greece is on Eastern European Time (UK +2 hours). Tap water on Corfu is generally safe in towns but most visitors drink bottled. The plug type is the standard European two-pin (Type C/F) — UK guests will need an adapter. EU roaming rules don't cover UK networks any more, so check your plan before travelling.
